All goals for Tanzania Project 2013 were met. Twelve thousand dollars was raised. In addition, 300 stuffed animals, 250 brand new outfits, and 100 shoes were donated to St. Francis and Upendo Orphanage.
In July of 2014, Dr. Flamez will return to Moshi, Tanzania. Several goals have been planned for the Tanzania Project 2014. Please note 100 percent of the donations go towards the projects below. My hope is that we can help assist as many projects below as possible.
1. Establish a Kindergarten Program for Sambarai/Kirima
Currently, there is no kindergarten program established in Sambarai/Kirima. A volunteer from the local parish comes in daily to teach the children across many ages. Donations will help provide an annual salary to hire a school teacher, provide uniforms for all the schools children, and purchase school supplies.
2. Keni Dispensary
Many people walk for over 15 plus miles to have their babies or seek treatment for themselves or their children at a dispensary. Dispensaries provide medication, HIV testing, etc. People often go to a local dispensary because they have no transportation to reach a hospital and/or cannot afford to be seen at a hospital. This year a new dispensary in Keni Parish is being built to service over 12,000 people. Money is being raised to complete the building of the dispensary and lab. Medications are also being collected.
3. Mawenzi Hospital
In Tanzania, the government does not provide disability or assistance to anyone diagnosed with a mental health disorder or disability. Over the years, Dr. Flamez and others have raised money to provide new beds and medication for the psychiatric patients seen here. This year money is being raised to continue to supply the psychiatric wing with medications for a full year.
4. Upendo Orphanage
Upendo Orphanage houses 58 children from birth to five-years-old. According to the Sister that runs the orphanage, many of these children were abandoned on a roadside or both parents have died. Money is being raised to provide a yearly supply of formula, medication, formula, and food for all the children. Dr. Flamez is also collecting shoes for these children and brand new clothing.
5. St. Francis Primary School
St. Francis is the only primary school for students with disabilities in Moshi, Tanzania. Many students have hearing, visual, and auditory impairments. Donations will help provide much needed school supplies and food for the children. Dr. Flamez is also collecting shoes for this school.
6. Secondary School for Children with Disabilities
Currently, the first secondary school is being built for students with disabilities. Last year money was raised to start the process of building the school. This year donations will help continue the efforts of completing the building of the school.
7. St. James Library
Over the years, Dr. Flamez and others have raised money for St. James to help renovate old classrooms. Currently, the library is almost empty and the resources are old and outdated. Dr. Flamez hopes to raise money to donate to purchase new and current books for a library.
